UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) used to conduct SCRA (Special Class Railway Apprentice) exam for admitting an undergraduate program of mechanical engineering at the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Jamalpur.
Under Graduate Course
The SCRA program was one of the country’s first engineering exam. SCRA exam comprised a written test in physics, chemistry, mathematics, English language, general knowledge, and a psychological test (mental ability). UPSC called The selected candidates for an interview. there was a medical test also.
Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, Ranchi used to give a four-year training programme in mechanical engineering. It was just like a common engineering program. It had semesters system with workshop training sessions.
The apprentices get a stipend of ₹ 9100 and dearness allowance, apart from other benefits such as medical care, privilege passes, PTOs, [expand acronym] etc. After completing four years’ training, they were part of the highest-level leadership program in the Railway organization. This cadre of officers joined the Indian Railway Services of Mechanical Engineers Officers (IRSME).
The railway needs technical specialist every time. To fulfil this requirement, Railway started an Apprentice (SCRA) scheme in 1927 by the British, to meet the demand for engineers on the East Indian Railway and Great Indian Peninsular Railways. Apprentices used to be trained at their railway’s largest workshop (i.e. Jamalpur Locomotive Workshop) and for one year in the United Kingdom. The selected candidates appeared in the mechanical engineering degree examination held by Engineering Council (London).
Thie scheme continued and has provided Indian Railways with its top-ranking officers after independence.
But at present, UPSC does not conduct SCRA exams
We are sorry to give you that information that In 2015, Railways decided to close down this examination.
Now UPSC does not conduct SCRA Exams since 2015.
